ABSTRACT
Isolated recurrent hypersomnia is characterized by recurrent episodes of hypersomnia without hyperphagia and hypersexuality and usually lasts a few days to 3 weeks and typically occur weeks or months apart. A 44-year-old woman with a 13-year-history of excessive daytime sleepiness(EDS) presented hypersomnic period that occurred several times a year with duration of minimum 12 hours to maximum 40 days and lasted 6 monsths only in winter. During hypersomnic period, she did not present any other symptoms. Physical and neurological examinations, laboratory results and brain MRI showed no abnormality. Nocturnal polysomnographic study and multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) in the end of hypersomnia period showed mild obstructive sleep hypopnea syndrome. This is the first case of isolated recurrent hypersomnia with excessive long duration of sleepiness.
